The Complete Interview List

1 - Tell us how your project was started.

The Goslings began around 2002. I had been home-recording music by myself for years, mostly drone stuff. I was always looking to work with other people but couldn’t find anyone I “clicked” with. Finally I begged Leslie (my then-girlfriend, now wife) to put vocals on one of my tracks. I always knew she could sing and stuff and we have the same tastes in music, but she’s never considered herself a musician... but after a lot of pleading she finally gave it a shot - it turned out to be a perfect match and we’ve been doing it ever since.

2 - What does music, in its entirety, mean to you?

It’s my life basically. I’ve been obsessed with music, especially underground music, since I was a little kid. I think it fills a lot of voids for people like me.

3 - What does art, in its entirety, mean to you?

I’m not sure. On the one hand I feel there’s something transcendental about it… or at least I’d like to think so… but on the other hand I think it’s a by-product of leisure.

4 - Who is your favorite author, and why?

I don’t have a favorite, there’s too many to choose… but I’d say Vonnegut for Slaughterhouse Five, Bukowksi for Factotum, Saul Bellow for Seize the Day, and Melville for Billy Budd.

5 - As your best friend, describe yourself.

I’m trustworthy.

6 - As your worst enemy, describe yourself.

I’m full of shit.

7 - If your persona were immortalized as a cartoon character, who would it be?

Dagwood

8 - Do you think there are conspiracies against the "everyday person"?

Yes and no. I do believe there are many people in positions of power ($$$) who deliberately and cynically try to maintain that power. But I also believe that these people are victims of false consciousness. I don’t mean that their actions are excusable – a pig is still a pig; there is right and wrong. But I don’t believe people in power are “above” the “masses” in terms of how they view the world - which is the kind of image you normally get when people talk about a “conspiracy”. In the end I think we’re all victims of false consciousness.

9 - What do you do with your spare or free time?

I have a one-year old daughter and I try to spend as much time with her as possible… but other than the usual stuff, making music is my full-time hobby.

10 - Please give us your interpretation of "the meaning of life".

Love and be loved.
